Most overplayed songs for 1991
I admit that this year was a hard pick, but I am going to settle on:
"Enter Sandman" Metallica
It's definately rare for a metal group to get overplayed, so you have to give them some credit. Back in the day, 96.1FM in Evansville was known as 96WSTO and they played current pop hits. They had a "Top Ten At Ten" show and at one time "Enter Sandman" made the top ten. This was the ONLY time that WSTO would play this song. I guess it was too "heavy metal" for the pop station to play but they had no choice but to play it on their top ten at ten. Of course we all know now that if you want to listen to Metallica, their music is readily available to download off the Internet! ( click here in case you don't know what I'm talking about )
Honorable mentions
"Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" Bryan Adams
There are several songs on my list that go with a movie. I have to admit that I overplayed this one myself. I even bought the sheet music for piano for it and let me tell you, it's incredibly hard. This one was hard to avoid overplay because the movie was popular as well as the song and video. I say this one is a close second.
"Motownphily" Boyz II Men
Boyz ii men, abc, bbd mmmmmhmmm
I always jokingly sang it as "bvd". I'm about to take the same approach for Boyz II Men as I did for Paula Abdul I think. This one is mild compared to one that's coming up soon. (hint: 1994)
"Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" C&C Music Factory
This one could be 90 or 91. Another one that appeared on Saturday Night Live. I'll give them some credit as well because I consider their music to be entirely dance music and it hit the pop charts. Though the chick you saw on stage was another lip-syncher.
"Unbelievable" EMF
90 or 91. In searching for other people's opinions on overplayed songs, this one kept popping up for 1991. I have the cassette single for this one and I liked it. Tis true though, it was played a lot.

Most overplayed songs for 1992
"Achy Breaky Heart" Billy Ray Cyrus
Indisputable for 1992. And when Weird Al does your song asking not to play it anymore, you know it's gotta be overplayed. I know that Billy Ray has released other albums but I don't think any of them were quite as popular or well know as this one. I think this is similar to what happened to Vanilla Ice. This is the music equivalent to "typecasting" in the movie world. When you hear the name Billy Ray Cyrus you automatically think "Achy Breaky Heart".... and mullets.
Honorable mentions
"Jump" Kris Kross
This one comes in a close second. How many were sick of this one once it lost it's popularity? I'm just glad I never wore my clothes backwards. I have actually danced to remixes of this song at dance clubs. I usually just do some funny walk around in a circle. I think these kids had potential but were also "typecasted" with this song.
"My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)" En Vogue
Now I really liked this song. I think it took some of it's music from "The Big Payback" by James Brown. And being a cross-charter (R&B and Pop), naturally it would get overplayed as well.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana
91 or 92. Now remember, I'm not always critical of the songs themselves, just how frequent their songs were played. I guess this song and group were considered "fresh" and so it was played until we couldn't take it anymore. I give MTV a lot of the blame for this one.
"To Be With You" Mr. Big
And Mr.Big was considered a "hair band" and this was their only hit song that I can remember. I remember an episode of Beavis and Butthead where they were watching a video with Satan in it. Butthead said "is that supposed to be scary or something?" and Beavis says "Yeah really. I've seen scarier Satans in Mr.Big videos!" This song is hardly rock, it's more like folk. But either way, I've heard it way too many times.
"Two Princes" Spin Doctors
And if you want to muhmawoiasndio, just go ahead now.
Yet another group to appear on SNL. Such a happy sounding tune. You know those people who are always giddy and smiling and always in a good mood even real early in the morning? There's nothing wrong with a positive attitude, but sometimes you can only take so much. So just like people, you can only stand so much cheer from a song. And therefore this song makes the list.

Man, I remember seeing Warrant, Trixter, and Firehouse at the Pacific Ampitheatre in Orange County, Ca in 92. Trixter encored with Enter Sandman..there was no escaping it!
